The Calusa carved wooden artifacts are like none others in North America. The greatest number of carved Calusa masks and artifacts were excavated at the Key Marco site in 1896.
The Calusa, their beliefs and ways exercised great influence over the entire southern portion of the Florida peninsula. They single-handedly forced the Spanish out of Florida. Recently, there is evidence of Calusa built sites fauther north on the Gulf Coast f Florida.
